The reference ring should fit well and be worn on the same hand and same finger. Ideally it should have a similar width and cross-section. This is important since a ring that is rounded on the inside fits different than a ring that is flat on the inside. Similarly, a ring that is wider usually requires a larger size than a narrow ring.
